Tried and Truisms of Bathroom Remodeling

In closing our discussion in this chapter let us leave you with the following thoughts, our truisms of bathroom design, things to keep in mind when planning your remodel:

* All design is a tension between technology and nature.

* Good design appears effortless.

* 90% of the work on termite reports relates to water damage around tubs and showers.

* Although boring, you can never go wrong with white fixtures and white tile (except maybe on a floor).

* The centerline of a sink should be at least 18 inches from an adjacent wall (unless it's a corner sink).

* Changes during the construction process always cost more than the same changes during the design process.

* There must be be 24 inches of unobstructed floor space in front of a toilet (code requirement).

* Switch the fan separately from the light or switch the fan with the light if you think people spend too long in the bathroom.

* Place the shower head high enough so that you don't bang your head on it.

* Sliding shower heads are a great idea, place the outlet low enough so they can be used to rinse the kids hair.
* The average Bay Area bathroom is remodeled every ten years.

* Sunken tubs are best when you step up into them.

* Quiet fans are better (unless you have a need to drown out certain sounds).

* The smaller the bathroom, the better the idea tile wainscoting is.

* The modern bathroom came into being in the 1920's and many fixtures and faucets reflect their art deco origins.

* Some items like tub faucets need to be installed early on in the construction process even though the part that you see is installed near the end.

* Decide the locations & sizes of your towel bars before the sheet rock is attached, this way blocking can be installed for the bars to be securely mounted to later.

* Provide a personal drawer for each individual in a multi user bathroom

* The smaller the bathroom, the more restrained the use of color and decoration should be.

* Wall sconces should be mounted just above eye level.
