Closing In

The installation of the sheet rock and tile backer board makes a dramatic change in the room. It becomes much easier to visualize the finished product. The joints in the drywall are taped and receive at least three coats of joint compound before being ready for painting.

Backerboard and Rock
If the floor is going to be tiled, the tile backer board or mud float is installed after the drywall had been mudded. Tile backer boards are used when the existing sub floor is reasonably flat . A mud float is an alternative when the sub floor is too irregular to provide a flat surface for the tile installation. If the floor is to be finished with resilient flooring - linoleum, then we install the underlayment at this time in the sequence. The idea is that the flooring substrate should run continuos under any cabinetry to avoid troublesome joints at the cabinet edges.

We then install any woodwork: the door and window casings, baseboards, ceiling crown moldings and wooden wainscoting. The room is usually painted when the trim work is complete. We then can install any cabinetry and countertops. Under mounted sinks are installed in conjunction with countertops.

Wall tiles, tub/shower surrounds, and tile wainscoting are next in the sequence. Ceramic tile installation is a two step process. First the tile is adhered to the substrate with thin set mortar. After this has set a minimum of 24 to 48 hours, the tile is grouted , that is, the spaces between tiles are filled with a specially formulated cement based material. Stone installations take longer in part because visible edges need to be profiled and polished which is best done after it has been cut to size.

Floor tile is installed and grouted after the wall tile is complete. Both of these receive a sealer after a minimum of 72 hours after grouting. We usually wait until the tile work is complete before having a bathtub refinished.
